Ziedlejas wellness resort is a natural retreat away from the crowds, designed in 2020 by Open AD architects, this project is at the heart of what Latvian tradition and heritage stands for. Two saunas have been completed and a third is in progress.
The first project or or ‘baltā pirts‘ (white sauna) are concrete structures built into the hillside so as not to interfere with the view from the guest cabin. It benefits from the natural light and proximity of the pool to jump into. The design concept is more inspired by natural materials and the proximity of the pool to jump into.
Second are the more ancient ‘melnā pirts‘ (smoke saunas) built from cypress trees and tucked into the forest. Although the sauna building remains traditional in terms of its purpose, the architects made sure to enhance the functionality and aesthetics from a contemporary design perspective.
The third sauna or ‘aitas vilnas pirts‘ (sheep’s wool sauna) is said to have special healing properties. Another larger building will house a reception, bicycle rental and several guest rooms.
In 2020 there will be additions in the form of four guest cabins with corten steel and glass. A tea house by day and a bedroom by night that are multifunctionally designed. The glass front provides a great view of the landscape and the stars at night. Here, guests can actually choose and mix their own herbal teas, and are accompanied by staff who are happy to explain the nature of each plant.
In the future, Ziedlejas will have a central pavilion to host weddings, yoga classes, conferences, wake-ups and other events. Ziedlejas’ story is about preserving Latvian heritage but not being afraid to keep up with the times. This is the best place to feel the local spirit and understanding of local ways. Each guest can learn about traditions and folklore. Everything here is local with a deep respect for craftsmanship, the environment and the growing human desire to reconnect with nature.
