For the first time, Apple has launched its retail store in Malaysia. Located within the new Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) in Kuala Lumpur, the store’s triple-layered roof structure emits a warm glow at night and acts as a focal point for the wider development. This rooftop concept creates a visual and spatial bridge between the mall’s central atrium and the rooftop garden, which includes lush tropical gardens and a communal lawn that wraps around the top floor of the store.
According to artist Stefan Behling, Head of studio, Foster + Partners, “We are thrilled to see Apple The Exchange TRX open its doors to the public. The project captures the vitality of the city, with a layered roof of stacked sun-shading slats that appears to float above the landscape. Galleries and walkways provide spectacular views of the surrounding nature and offer unexpected views through the shop on multiple levels. The store’s grand interior showcases Apple’s innovative product range and aims to lift people’s spirits with a celebration of light and shadow.”
Unique roof suited to Malaysia’s tropical climate
Designed as a glass dome, the 87-foot square roof transitions smoothly from a square to a round shape as it rises. In response to Malaysia’s tropical climate, a series of strategically angled fins provide shade, control solar radiation and ensure a comfortable interior environment. While the fins appear solid on the lower levels, they gradually become more open as visitors move up through the space. The lowest fin stretches outward to protect the glass facade and creates a shaded walkway around the edge of the store. The central glass oculus, with 30% ceramic frit, brings soft daylight into the interior and incorporates dynamic lighting features.
Three-level concept with eternal materiality
The store is situated over three levels, culminating in an observation deck at the top that connects directly to the edge of the park, bringing a touch of nature and natural light into the store’s towering interior. A sculpted quartz and glass staircase, alongside a bespoke glass lift, facilitates movement between levels. Layered landings throughout the space create a sense of openness and allow for captivating views in various areas. The forum is located on the floating deck and the walkway and display tables are on the lowest level with direct connections to the mall. The store has video walls and meeting rooms, as well as a dedicated Apple Pickup station. The Apple Exchange TRX is designed with a palette of refined, high-quality materials, including natural stone walls, polished stainless steel columns, light Terrazzo floors, and wood ceilings.
