Located on Karpathos island known for its picturesque villages staggered roofs and shared balconies, Stockholm-based firm OOAK architects has designed a viewpoint residence, the project itself partly located on the roof of an existing building. Turning a challenge into an advantage, this rooftop offers stunning 180 degree views with views of the Diafani harbor to the east, the Aegean sea to the north and the Diafani settlement to the west. The main goal of this project is to maintain the feeling of the roof outside the site while creating a house on it.
The site is designed to be a private vantage point, the veranda, flanked by perimetrical walls, offers maximum privacy and protection against the sun and wind. The enclosed volume connected above the veranda is designed with reference to the island’s vernacular architecture, providing shade for the roof and accommodating all the private spaces in the house.
The open space on the veranda becomes a social function of the house, a summer space that has an indefinite indoor and outdoor character thanks to an opening of 13.8 m with only a perimetrical wall structural support. The residence is surrounded by views and close to the sea, as well as the location in the vernacular settlement, is the main attraction of the house. The interior is designed to highlight and enrich this experience. Collages of colors and materials and play with heights and shapes in all rooms anchor the house around it and maximize the potential of a small space.
